Hearing other’s experiences made me feel that I wasn’t crazy, that I’m doing great for where I am right now,” said one woman.
One of the most common things I hear people say when they first join a Peace After Divorce group is that prior to joining the group they had thought they were the only divorced or divorcing person who felt like they were going crazy.
As soon as discussions begin, they realize that they are not alone. Crazy, confused, and conflicting emotions and thoughts are fairly common when it comes to the divorce experience. Feeling disoriented, fearful, lost, or like your world has ended is normal with divorce.
Getting a handle on what is normal when it comes to the emotions of divorce is somehow comforting. Knowing what you’re going through is a normal part of divorce grief doesn’t solve all of your problems but it does normalize your experience. If what you’re going through is normal then you begin to realize that you’re really not going crazy.
You see, if you’re not really going crazy then you come to realize that it is possible for you to move beyond the crazy feelings.
It’s liberating to know what you are experiencing is natural. There is hope for life after divorce because crazy isn’t a permanent state.
Successfully and prayerfully working through the spin-off of divorce will help you to move to a less crazy-feeling place. It takes effort. It takes intent. It takes time. You can do it.
Yes, there is hope for life after divorce.
Take a deep breath. Relax and turn your face to God and thank him that the crazy feelings of divorce don’t have to last forever. Ask him to wash you in his peace and to guide you to resources to help you heal from divorce.
Talk with God
Share all your crazy thoughts with God. Ask him to give you faith to know that the craziness you feel right now will not last forever. Listen so that the Holy Spirit might fill you with wisdom and peace. What concrete actions to you need to take based on what God is saying to you?
Getting Past Crazy
I’ve felt the craziness of divorce. I discovered the importance of support in getting through those crazy stressful times—support from God, family and friends, and knowledgeable resources. It is so good to know that divorce upheaval and crazy feelings don’t have to last forever.
